Cause baby you’re a firework
Come on show ’em what you’re worth
Make ’em go “Oh, oh, oh!”
As you shoot across the sky
-Katy Perry, Firework
This song is incredibly popular: 169,720,238 hits on YouTube. Read the comments, and you see that people love it because it’s so hopeful. Plus, lets just be honest, it’s catchy. I’ll probably be singing it for the rest of the day.
What I find tragic is this really is all the hope the world has to offer. We really are just fireworks. At best, we’ll shine for a few seconds and then fizzle away. Hopefully we won’t blow up and kill someone near us. And honestly, we’ll probably be remembered in the big scheme of things like most fireworks. Is there any particular firework you remember all that well? Light your fuse. Do your best. Burn your fuel. Live your life. Blow up. Be pretty. The end. Baby, you’re a firework.
“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher,
“Vanity of vanities! All is vanity.”
Before I make myself feel all gloomy, lets remember that there is much better hope out there than this song offers. There is a much warmer, brighter, Light out there and it has “come into the world”. And he offers a life much better than that of a firework for those whose goal isn’t to “show em what you’re worth”.
And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.
