“Few men have virtue to withstand the highest bidder.”
Washington is a keen observer. We are constantly having bids made on our lives. The things and people of this world are constantly promising joy and fun and life in return for our time and resources. It is difficult to resist those things which seem to be making the greatest promises.
However, I think Washington forgets one thing. Most people spend all their lives withstanding the Highest Bidder. God makes the highest bid, and his offer is life overflowing and never-ending. His offer is the warm affectionate Father for his child. His offer was his Child.
Who will except God’s bid? Why do so many withstand the Highest Bidder? We withstand because His bid seems too small, and what He asks of us seems too great. He asks for our faith, and when you place your trust in an all-powerful eternal God, your life is no longer your own. Most want to keep their lives rather than except the bid, not realizing that anyone who keeps their life will lose it, but anyone who loses his life for Christ’s sake will truly find it and keep it for eternity.
We accept TV’s bid because we believe the entertainment is worth all the lost time.
We reject the Father’s bid because we are afraid we are following him to some tourist trap called Heaven.
Few men have the faith to accept the Highest Bidder.
